A Letter from the Gloria Dei Church Council

A church of course isn’t a business. A church does, however, have business. We also are living in some strange times with Covid-19. Accordingly, we want to take a moment and update you on how we have been handling some of Gloria Dei’s business during this pandemic.

For the safety of everyone, in-person worship services were halted in March. Through extraordinary efforts our pastors and staff have brought us on-line worship and found other ways to help us stay connected. Over the past two months members have been slowly returning to in-person worship. We are also adding additional cameras and technology to augment our on-line abilities for the future.

Since March, church council has been meeting by Zoom approximately every two weeks. We have been keeping a close watch on finances. Currently Gloria Dei is doing fine. Revenue is down approximately $360,000 compared to the budget approved at our annual meeting in January, but likewise expenses are down approximately $264,000.

In April Gloria Dei applied for and obtained a $256,000 “loan” as part of the Small Business Administration Paycheck Protection Program. The PPP is designed to provide an incentive for small businesses to keep workers on the payroll, with the loan being forgiven if employee retention criteria are met and the funds are used for eligible expenses. While we have not received confirmation that our loan is forgiven, we are expecting that to occur. For our accounting purposes, the $256,000 PPP money has not been and will not be considered revenue until the loan is officially forgiven.

Your financial support and the PPP loan have allowed us to continue employing all of Gloria Dei’s pastors and staff these past six months. We have also continued programming to the extent we can safely do so and have been financially supporting other organizations as approved in our annual budget. The PPP has ended, however, and nobody knows when things when things will return to normal. We are preparing our 2021 annual budget with this in mind. The church council will continue to monitor our financial condition, and we are prepared if necessary to make difficult decisions regarding our benevolent giving, programming and staffing. We hope, pray, and trust those difficult decisions will not be necessary.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve on the church council and thank you for all you do for Gloria Dei!
