Thousands and Thousands

Hello Gloria Dei,

I mentioned a few weeks ago that Gloria Dei turns 35 years old this month. Happy Birthday Gloria Dei. A milestone celebration like this gives us great opportunity to be grateful to God for the gift of the church. Through the church, the Good News of Jesus Christ is proclaimed and lived out. And as you know, the church is not a building. The church is the people. The church is you and me, all of us together in mission.

Through these years there have been thousands of people who have called the Gloria Dei community their church home. Thousands of people have been inspired and enriched by God’s Word and calling on their lives. Thousands of people have given of their time, talent, and treasure, to ensure that the mission-mindedness to which Christ calls us has remained central at Gloria Dei.

So, first of all, thank you. Thank you for being who you are. Thank you for taking the gospel of Jesus Christ seriously and joyfully. Thank you for allowing Jesus, the light of the world, to shine in and through you to this world so much in need of Christ’s word of hope, faith, and love.

This month we also celebrate with the current oldest charter member of Gloria Dei. Many of you remember and know Ann Loken. Many of you don’t, as she hasn’t physically been able to be with us in worship for a few years. But Ann is a treasure. And although we don’t normally mention people’s birthdays, I want us all to give a shout out Happy Birthday to Ann.

Ann turns 95 years old on April 28. We were planning on having a reception between services for Ann this coming Sunday at church. Obviously we can’t do that now. But I want all of you to get to know Ann a bit better. I know for me personally, when I visit with Ann, I am blessed by her beyond measure. Ann wanted me to relay this message from her: “I have loved Gloria Dei from the beginning. It has been such an important part of my life.”

Fellow Charter Member, Becky Blue, has been friends with Ann for many years. Becky has written a note, or a blog, about her friend Ann in celebration of Ann’s 95th birthday. You can find Becky’s letter here.

For those who wish to send Ann a Happy Birthday card or note, I am including her address. We have permission from both Ann and her family to do so.

Ann, together with the thousands and thousands of others at Gloria Dei, have been commissioned by Christ to go and make disciples. Our text for this Sunday’s worship is Jesus’ Great Commission found in Matthew 28:16-20. Please read it in preparation for worship.

Happy Birthday Ann. Happy Birthday Gloria Dei. God is good, all time. All the time, God is good.

See you in worship online,

Pastor Tim
